Discplined isn’t built on being excited – it’s built on repetition. Learn how to master boring work and turn consistency into progress.
Everybody loves the idea of hard work – until it gets boring. That’s when most people quit. But thruthfully thatäs where most of the growth occurs.
A great quote about this from Chris Williamson: “The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding“
I really believe this quote emphasises what i’m trying to teach you. Because if you really think about it – It’s the truth.
In a earlier post, we went through the emotion of motivation, and how to turn it into discipline. Here’s some tips how you can use motivation to become disciplined and make boring work easier to do.
Find flow in repetition
Boring work becomes easier when you change how you look at it. Instead of seeing it as a routine, look at it like practice. Because the more you do something, the better you become at it. Writing E-Mails all day? Surely it’s boring for some, but you become a better writer every E-Mail you send.
When you approach repetition as mastery of something, boring work become easier to focus on.
Track your progress
Tracking your progress is a good way to shift your focus on doing, instead of feeling, because if you show up enough times, you can see a positive shift.
For example in the gym, when your lifts go up, you will see the progress you’ve made. If you just focus on the doing, all the rest will follow.
Ordinary Effort Creates Extraordinary Results
Nobody sees the boring things, the many hours spent behind the scenes of your work. But that is ultimately where the magic occurs.
The best olympic weightlifter was once a beginner walking into the gym for the first time, but through countless hours of doing, instead of feeling, became a world champion.
But nobody saw that part, they only saw the person on the stage.
If you want to build something that lasts, you have to learn the art of doing boring work well.
The world rewards those who keep going after the excitement fades.
